Canva Templates Explained
Save time with Canva templates — how to find, customize, and even create your own reusable templates.
Canva Templates Explained
Templates are one of Canva's biggest time-savers. They give you professionally designed starting points that you can customize in minutes.
What Are Templates?
Templates are pre-designed layouts created by professional designers. They include styled text, images, colors, and graphics — all you need to do is swap in your own content.
Finding Templates
- From the home page — browse featured templates or search by type
- Inside a design — click the "Templates" tab on the left panel
- Search by keyword — "minimalist Instagram", "professional resume", etc.
- Filter by:
- Style (minimalist, bold, elegant, playful)
- Theme (business, education, social media)
- Color
- Free vs Pro
Customizing Templates
- Change text — click any text to edit the content
- Swap images — drag your photos over existing images to replace them
- Change colors — click elements and change their colors to match your brand
- Change fonts — select text and pick a new font
- Add/remove elements — delete what you don't need, add what you do
- Resize — use "Resize" (Pro) to adapt to different platforms
Creating Your Own Templates
- Design a layout you want to reuse
- Use placeholder text like "Your Heading Here"
- Save it in a dedicated "Templates" folder
- To reuse: open the design and click "File → Make a copy"
- Edit the copy — original stays intact
Template Tips
- Start with templates, then customize heavily — never publish a template as-is
- Create a template set for your brand — consistent Instagram posts, stories, etc.
- Use the "Styles" button to instantly apply different color/font combos
- Brand Kit (Pro) — apply your brand fonts and colors to any template with one click
