Canva Layers Explained
Master Canva's layering system to control element order, grouping, and complex design layouts.
Canva Layers Explained
Layers control which elements appear in front of or behind other elements. Understanding layers is key to creating polished, complex designs.
What Are Layers?
Every element you add to a Canva design exists on its own layer. The layer order determines what's visible:
- Back layer — background image or color (bottom)
- Middle layers — shapes, photos, decorative elements
- Front layer — text and key information (top)
Accessing the Layers Panel
- Click on any element in your design
- Click "Position" in the top toolbar
- Or use the keyboard shortcut: click the layers icon on the bottom toolbar
- The Layers panel shows every element listed from top to bottom
Layer Actions
| Action | How | Shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Bring Forward | Position → Forward | Ctrl/⌘ + ] |
| Send Backward | Position → Backward | Ctrl/⌘ + [ |
| Bring to Front | Position → To front | Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + ] |
| Send to Back | Position → To back | Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + [ |
Grouping Elements
Group related elements so they move and resize together:
- Select multiple elements (Shift + click each one)
- Click "Group" in the toolbar, or press Ctrl/⌘ + G
- To ungroup: select the group and click "Ungroup" or press Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + G
Locking Layers
- Lock elements you don't want to accidentally move (like backgrounds)
- Right-click an element → "Lock"
- Or click the lock icon in the Layers panel
- Locked elements can't be selected, moved, or edited until unlocked
Layer Best Practices
- Lock your background — prevents accidental moves
- Group related elements — keeps complex designs manageable
- Name your layers (if available) for complex projects
- Use the Layers panel to select elements hidden behind others
